The Arts Council offers a variety of art and acting classes and camps throughout the year for children and adults. Check this page often to stay up to date on all of our classes and camps!

Introduction to Sketching the Human Form - I and II

Great introductory class for novices or for beginning artists who need practice in figure sketching! We will start by utilizing art references and then move on to a clothed model for inspiration in exploring basic figure sketching concepts. The human form will gently emerge through soft charcoal studies and you will also enjoy the excitement and immediacy of quick gestural sketches and other approaches.

Note: Prior figure students may focus on their favorite mediums.

Prices: $135 for YAC members and $150 for non-members.

Supplies and Model: Students share cost of charcoal and model fee. Other supplies available locally. Information emailed upon registration.

Fiber Art Camp for Adults & Teachers

Dates: June 12th-16th

This week workshop is geared for adults and teachers wanting to explore simple fiber arts projects. Teachers will get special tips on how to incorporate simple fiber art lessons into the classroom and non-teachers will enjoy getting to play and experiment with different fiber techniques in a relaxing and fun atmosphere.

We will do basic weaving on cardboard looms, cup weaving, dyeing, and simple hand sewing projects that can be used in the class or to inspire you to begin a new hobby.

Prices: YAC Members $100

Mixed Media Art Camp for Adults & Teachers

Another fun week workshop dedicated to adults and teachers. This week will focus on mixed media collage, painting, journaling, and drawing projects many of which can be adapted to classroom use.

Special tips for teachers on how to incorporate into class lessons and for adults wanting to get hands-on practice in mixed media techniques.

Digital Photography Intensive: Learn How to Take Better Pictures

Dates: June 24th
Times: 1-5 pm
Ages: 12 & up

In this workshop, students will explore why they should shoot on manual and learn how a camera uses averages. Students will also learn about aperture, depth of field spot metering, ISO and sensitivity of sensor, shutter speed and using a telephoto lens.

Students will also learn about composition and lighting, framing the subject in the national geographic style, and the how the human eyes sees.

Students will learn through examples and through firsthand experience on a photo-walk with the instructor to apply the skills learned in class. Everyone will try using their cameras on manual and practice composition. Students will also receive exercises to help develop an eye for composition, lighting and framing and using their cameras better on manual.

Supplies: Students will need an SLR camera or a relatively advanced point & shoot (that shoots in manual) as well as something with which to take notes.

Minimum of 5 students required to hold this workshop.

Art Camps

Early Bird Art Camp

The children in these camps will explore lots of different art techniques and materials, will participate in daily art challenges, games and crafts projects and have a movie break each day after lunch. Children will be provided with snacks but will need to bring a lunch if they are full day.

Please note that because of the wide range of ages in this class, students will be grouped in two classes for projects to insure success and common interest. Ages 3-7 will be in one group and Ages 8-10 will be in another. They will eat lunch, snacks and watch movies together.

Art Safari Camp

Dates: May 29-June 2

This fun week will be themed around drawing, painting, sculpting and making animals of all types. Children will learn how to use different media to create furry, scaly and feathery animals sure to make them and you smile. Full day children need to bring a lunch and an afternoon movie (animal themed) will help break up the day.

Please note that because of the wide range of ages in this class, students will be grouped in two classes for projects to insure success and common interest. Ages 3-7 will be in one group and Ages 8-12 will be in another. They will eat lunch, snacks and watch movies together.

American Folk Art Camp

For those children who need something fun to do during the holiday break! We will explore folk art with an American slant- Pennsylvania Dutch Folk Art, southern folk art and more will be introduced. Full day children need to bring a lunch and a movie will be shown to break up the day.

Storybook Art Camp

Dates: July 10th-14th

A fun week inspired by books, illustrators and authors. Students will create their own short stories with pictures and also create many projects in the style of and inspired by various author/illustrators.

Beginning Sewing Camp

Dates: July 10th-14th

A week workshop designed to teach beginners how to sew on the machine as well as some basic hand sewing skills. Students must bring their own machine and supplies. List will be provided at registration.

Art to Sew - Fashion Runway Camp

Dates: July 17th-21st

This special offering will introduce children to the world of sewing garments and will end with a fashion show for parents on the last day of class. Students will learn how to use a commercial pattern, make style choices, and create a garment or outfit from a few selected pattern choices. The days will be broken up with snack and lunch breaks and time to draw fashion ideas, work on hair/makeup designs and accessory choices for the fashion show. Student must have previous sewing class or instruction on the machine and need to be able to thread their machines independently.

Painting Camp

Dates: July 24th-28th

Students will be introduced to painting with tempera, watercolor and acrylic paints using brushes, and various other unconventional tools and techniques to create abstract and realistic paintings. Full day children need to bring a lunch and an afternoon movie will help break up the day. Children will be divided into two age groups for art activities but will be together for lunch.  

Please note that because of the wide range of ages in this class, students will be grouped in two classes for projects to insure success and common interest. Ages 3-7 will be in one group and Ages 8-12 will be in another. They will eat lunch, snacks and watch movies together.

Last Call Art Camp

Dates: July 31st-August 4th

Registration Policy:

Payment is due at time of registration. If not received by 2 weeks before the class begins, your name will be taken off the list to allow for people on the waiting list to get in. Also, refunds will not be made for cancellations made 7 or less days before the class starts, but you will get a credit for a future class depending on availability in that class. There will also be a $15 administration charge per child if you need to switch the week your child attends class, and the switch will be made only if there is availability for another class. Switches cannot be done past a week before the scheduled start date.

Lego Camps

Lego: Elementary Engineering

Dates: May 29th-June 2nd
Times: 9-12 pm
Ages: K-2nd Grade

Students will design and modify machines using building blocks and basic engineering principles. This is an integrated math and science class. Campers will build 21st-century skills such as basic engineering concepts, critical thinking and problem solving, and communication and collaboration skills.

Campers get to take home the Lego kits used in this camp. Minimum of 8 campers.

Lego: Vehicle Engineering

Dates: May 29th-June 2nd
Times: 1-4 pm
Ages: 3rd-6th Grade
Instructor: Wani McFarland


Students will use basic engineering principles to build multiple vehicles used in everyday life. Students will use problem solving and critical thinking to re-engineer these vehicles into creative machines. Campers will build 21st-century skills such as basic engineering concepts, critical thinking and problem solving, and communication and collaboration skills.

Campers get to take home the Lego kits used in this camp. Minimum of 8 campers.

Lego: A Journey into Space

Dates: July 17th-21st

Ages: 1st-6th Grade

The sky is no limit for your future engineers as they journey from earth to outer space and beyond. Well help them blaze a trail to develop architecture, design, problem-solving and team building skills while driving home key STEM elements and reinforce the importance of simple machines. Campers will build 21st-century skills such as basic engineering concepts, critical thinking and problem solving, and communication and collaboration skills.

Campers get to take home the Lego kits used in this camp. Minimum of 8 campers.

Lego: Junior Engineering

Dates: July 24th-28th

Ages: 1st-6th Grade

Students will build projects of slightly higher complexity using gears and motors using our unique kits. A must for students who enjoy building with building blocks. Students will keep all projects completed in this class. Campers will build 21st-century skills such as basic engineering concepts, critical thinking and problem solving, and communication and collaboration skills.

Campers get to take home the Lego kits used in this camp. Minimum of 8 campers.

Ballet Camps

Beginner Ballet Camp Session 1

Dates: June 5th, 7th, 12th, 14th, 19th, 21st, 26th & 28th

Each individual class will begin with light stretches (butterfly, hamstrings, etc.) and then move to the barre where we will work on mastering the five ballet positions. We will then move to the center of the floor and continue working on these positions. We will next practice ballet walks, skips, simple turns, and leaps across the floor.

We will finish off the class with a rehearsal of the dance and more light stretching. Each camp will have a Wednesday performance every two weeks that the instructor will choreograph in conjunction with the students. This performance will take place as part of the regularly scheduled class, and parents will be invited to observe.

Theatre Camps

Kid's Improv Class & Show

About the Workshop:

This popular two-week long workshop is focused on the development of performance skills in music theatre and includes exercises in singing, acting, and movement. There will be two sections of the camp for different age groups.

Julia Aubrey, Director of the Ford Center for the Performing Arts & UM Opera Theatre, and Dr. Robert Aubrey, Instructional Assistant Professor of Music Education bring a wealth of experience to the Youth Music Theatre Workshop.  This husband and wife team has collaborated on children’s theatre, university and professional opera and musical theatre productions for over thirty years.  Since its inception in 1996, the Youth Music Theatre Workshop has provided performance opportunities for children in Oxford and surrounding areas in musical theatre, operetta, and original works. Previous productions included preparing the seven children in The Sound of Music for the 2012 Oxford Shakespeare Festival.
